There
are three things that I remembered most about this year's Fall Break picnic:
COLD weather, HOT food, and PLENTY of gambling. The camping ground for this year is the McDowell Park. Because of the cold weather, not a lot of people went to this picnic. But there were enough to make it worth the trip. Soon after we arrived at the park, a football injury took place. Quye^n (I don't remember which Quye^n!) was the receiver of DDa.t's football throw. Unfortunately, she used her head instead of the hands. The result was a splitting headache and teary eyes! Two thumbs down for DDa.t's bad throw and one thumb up for Quye^n to stay on despite the headache. DDa.t was ready to receive his punishment but Quye^n was willing to forgive and forget. After
we unpacked the cars and moved things down to the camp ground, the guys
immediately tried to get the grills on fire. The fires were a relief against
the cold weather and almost everybody formed a circle around the fires.
Of course, there were oil squirtings and fire stunts involved. One gentleman
got his jeans on fire and it burnt a big strip of his pants without him
realizing it until it was too late to prevent the damage. That got everybody
a big laugh. We finally got the coals burnt good enough to cook after
wasting more than half the oil bottle. While waiting for the food to cook, some of us started to play cards. I didn't remember much after that except the eating, drinking, and card playing! And there were plenty of that going on. Many of the That continued to go on until around 1:30 PM when we decided to pack up and went house hopping. The packing was a lot lighter since we already ate most of the foods and drank a lot of soda. The foods were good thank to the good hands of Quye^n (injured one) and Ha.nh, who was smart enough to go cooking foods for us instead of loosing more money (all two dollars worth) unlike Tha?o, who almost lost her shirt playing cards. Tra` was nice enough to volunteer his aunt's house for the first hop. Once inside, the couches were immediately taken up by a lot more people that they were designed for. Some tried to set up the kareoke machine but they couldn't manage it. The rest of us started another card game with Tie^'n Le^n. Sometime afterward, we changed to Black Jack to accomodate more (a lot more) people who wanted to play too. I was amazed at the level of cheating going on (even by the most respected (yeah right!) people). It got bad enough that we got kicked out sometime later. Tra` own house was the next and last house that we hopped to. There was a singing machine already setup and a few gentlemen (Cu*o*`ng and two, three others) were nice enough to provide us with live music (we didn't care much about the quality!). The only down side at Tra` house was that no food was allowed in the living room where the gambling was setup. The big plus was that the living room floor was pretty big to allow everybody to play cards in. This was where the serious gambling took place. As usual, there were plenty of cheating going on. The new twist here were a lot of money borrowing and money beggings going on during the game. It lasted a long time to around 5 to 5:30 PM. Quye^n, Hie^'u, and a tall lady (I don't remember the name but she took a large chunk of my skin when I pointed out to the dealer that she was cheating!) were the big winners. I think DDa.t was the last winner of the Winner Took All game of Ba`i Ca`o ($9 total). I was a big looser but I think it was worth the entertainment. I can't hardly wait for the next one <g>. |
